THE INTERNATIONAL WORKING GROUP ON PLANT VIRUSES WITH FUNGAL VECTORS (IWGPVFV)

Welcome to the IWGPVFV Home Page!

About the IWGPVFV

The IWGPVFV exists to encourage research, contacts and communication amongst anyone who is interested in plant viruses transmitted by "fungi" and/or the "fungal" vectors. Members of the group have a wide range of research interests, covering both applied and fundamental studies. This includes control of viruses and vectors, epidemiology, biology and taxonomy of the vectors (Olpidium, Polymyxa, Spongospora spp.) and the molecular biology of the viruses.

The IWGPVFV was officially launched at the 5th International Congress of Plant Pathology in Kyoto, Japan, in 1988 following an initiative by Professor C Hiruki. The group produces a Register of Research Interests and organises workshops at intervals of approximately 3 years. Membership is free of charge and open to all who are actively engaged in any aspect of research work on these viruses or their fungal vectors.

Previous meetings organised by the IWGPVFV

Workshops have been held every three years since 1990. The proceedings have been published and are available here for downloading:

Next Symposium

The Ninth Symposium of the IWGPVFV will be held in Obihiro, Hokkaido, Japan from August 19-22, 2013. The local organiser is Tetsuo Maoka (iwgpvfv2013@naro.affrc.go.jp). Ueli Merz has sent out a first announcement in February 12 and an extended second announcement in February 13. A website is installed.

Outcomes of the General Assembly at the 2011 meeting

1. IWGPVFV Quo vadis?
There was a basic discussion about the future of the working group. This discussion was initiated by Claude Bragard as the number of participants was lowest compared to all other meetings. The discussion resulted in the resolution to continue the activities of the group.
2. Next symposium
A delegation from Japan (Yukio Shirako/Tetsuo Maoka) volunteered to host the next meeting in Japan. It was suggested that it should be held in 2013 when the ICPP congress will be in Beijing (August 25-31) to make it easier for the participants to attend both. A short survey revealed that only a few participants see an advantage and an opportunity in the coincidence. The chairman decided to make this topic a matter of the committee.
3. The Committee
Mike Adams is a longterm and very deserving member of the committee. He also hosts the groups website at Rothamsted. Since some time he couldn't attend our meetings and the question raised if he agrees to pass his committee membership and duty over to others. After his positive answer it was suggested to move the website hosting to the ETH and welcome Claude Bragard as the new committee member which was accepted by the participants. A big thank you goes to Mike.
4. Website
As mentioned before the website moves to the ETH in Zürich and is hosted by Ueli Merz. The URL is: "www.iwgpvfv.ethz.ch".
5. Miscellanous
Ueli Merz will collect all the proceedings, produce the layout of the booklet and send it to Charlie Rush for printing. he will send a reminder to the speakers.
